Out of the total rural population of the región, a 75% lives under the line of absolute poverty. The area where the project is being developed is one of the most prone to suffer the impacts of droughts and as a consequence of this, every year, around 1.2 million people depend on food aid, either as food against work or food distributed for free. The limited income sources, the demographic pressure, the climatic conditions and the severe soil erosion have created chronic problems of food insecurity which make difficult the economic development of hundreds of families, most of them headed by women, in the rural areas. With a median rate of 5 children (6 sons and daughters), most them in school age, they confront such economic problems that they have to take the children out from school in order to help the family by shepherding the livestock. It is very important to approach all these issues in order to improve life conditions for this population. Thus, the objective of the project is to guarantee food security through the implementation of activities along the river in order to preserve the soil and the water with rubblework walls to stop sediments, by making gabions and by planting autochthonous vegetal species. It is thus, an integral and humane development project which reinforces the economic possibilities of the area and promotes agricultural development.
